Ledger Getting Started Hub

Welcome to your new Ledger device. Follow these essential steps to set up your hardware wallet securely and begin your journey into self-custody.

Step 1: Download & Install Ledger Live

Ledger Live is your all-in-one companion app for your hardware wallet. It allows you to securely set up your device, install applications for different cryptocurrencies, manage your accounts, and make transactions. It's the only software you need.

Always download Ledger Live directly from the official website: ledger.com/start. Never download it from an app store or any other third-party link. This ensures you are getting genuine, untampered software, which is critical for securing your assets.

Download Ledger Live

Step 2: Initialize Your New Device

Once Ledger Live is installed, open the app and follow the on-screen instructions. It will guide you through the two most important parts of setup:

A. Set Your PIN Code

You will first be asked to choose a 4 to 8-digit PIN code. This PIN is entered directly on your Ledger device every time you want to unlock it. Think of it as the lock screen for your wallet. Choose a code only you know and never share it.

B. Secure Your 24-Word Recovery Phrase

Your device will now display a unique 24-word Recovery Phrase. This is the single most important piece of information you will receive. This phrase is the master backup for all your crypto assets.

Ledger Live will then ask you to confirm your phrase to ensure you have written it down correctly. This is the only time you will ever interact with the phrase during setup.

Step 3: Install Apps & Add Accounts

Your device is now secure! The next step is to install applications. Your Ledger device uses "apps" to manage different cryptocurrencies (e.g., a Bitcoin app, an Ethereum app, a Solana app).

  • In Ledger Live, go to the "My Ledger" tab.
  • Connect and unlock your device to allow Ledger Live to access it.
  • Find the apps you need in the "App catalog" (like Bitcoin) and click "Install".
  • Once an app is installed, go to the "Accounts" tab and click "Add Account" to create your first account for that crypto.

Think of it this way: the "app" is on your device, and the "account" is in Ledger Live, which is secured by your device. You can now send and receive crypto to this account.
